Mika Yamamoto, Mika Yamamoto Dead: Japanese TV Journalist Killed In Aleppo Gunfight

Mika Yamamoto, Mika Yamamoto Dead: Japanese TV Journalist Killed In Aleppo Gunfight, A Japanese journalist died of wounds sustained in Aleppo on Tuesday, the scene of heavy clashes between Syrian forces and rebels, a Syrian activist group said in a statement.

Japan's Kyodo news agency, quoting an official at the Japanese embassy in Turkey, identified the journalist as Mika Yamamoto, an award-winning reporter who worked for Tokyo-based independent news wire Japan Press.

Japan Press was not immediately available for comment. Its web site said Yamamoto, who was born in 1967, had covered conflicts in such places as Afghanistan and Iraq. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Japanese reporter had been injured in the Suleimaniya district of Aleppo.

The Syrian activist group also said that a Lebanese journalist, a Turkish journalist and an Arab journalist, whose nationality it did not identify, had disappeared in Aleppo.

It was not possible to independently verify the account. Mika Yamamoto (Yamamoto Mika) (1967 – 20 August 2012) was an award-winning Japanese video and photo journalist for the news agency Japan Press. Yamamoto was killed on 20 August 2012 while covering the ongoing Syrian civil war in Aleppo, Syria. She is the first Japanese and fourth foreign journalist killed in the Syrian Civil War that began in March 2011. She is also the fifteenth journalist killed in Syria in 2012. Yamamoto was born in Tsuru, a city in Yamanashi Prefecture, in 1967. Her father is Koji Yamamoto, a former Asahi Shimbun reporter. She graduated from Tsuru University. Yamamoto and her Japanese colleague, Kazutaka Sato, were travelling with the Free Syrian Army members when the attack occurred in Aleppo.

She was seriously wounded in the Suleiman al Halabi district of the city during a clash between Syrian opposite forces and pro-government forces on 20 August 2012  fellow journalist Sato stated that Yamamoto's death occurred when pro-regime troops appeared and started "random shooting". She died at a nearby hospital after being shot in the neck. A rebel fighter reported that she was killed during shelling by the pro-government forces. Masaru Sato, a spokesman with the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, confirmed her death on 20 August 2012. Her body was delivered by the members of the Liwa Asifat al Shamal, one of the groups attached to the Free Syrian Army, to Japanese consular officials in Kilis, southern Turkey, at 01:00 pm on 21 August 2012.
